In January, after completing our buying appointments during Paris Fashion Week, FASHIONREAL continued north to Copenhagen. What began as a first exploratory visit quickly became one of the most valuable discoveries of the season. At CIFF, our buyers encountered a rich mix of Scandinavian creativity, strong commercial thinking and distinctive emerging labels. The only regret was that we had not allowed ourselves enough time.

From a First Look to a Deeper Strategy
That January visit gave us more than a list of new names. It showed us how Copenhagen connects design integrity, everyday wearability, cultural confidence and a progressive retail mindset. Our buyers returned with fresh references and a clear conclusion: Copenhagen deserved a more focused, better paced and more deeply structured programme.
From 3–5 August, we are returning with three full days designed around a simple principle: discovery is most valuable when commercial buying, industry access, cultural learning and retail observation inform one another. This is not a standard trade-fair tour. It is a carefully sequenced professional journey for Chinese independent boutique owners who want to strengthen both their brand mix and their point of view.
Day One: Building Market Breadth at CIFF
Our first day begins inside CIFF with a welcome breakfast in the VIP Lounge, followed by an official presentation and guided orientation. This order matters. Before asking buyers to make decisions, we help them understand the exhibition’s structure, brand zones and commercial landscape.
The afternoon is protected for serious market research, brand conversations and ordering. With more than 1,000 brands across commercial fashion, contemporary essentials, denim, streetwear and childrenswear, CIFF allows buyers to compare categories, price levels and product strengths within one concentrated environment. Teams can identify reliable foundation pieces for sell-through while also discovering labels capable of refreshing a store’s identity.

We also build professional discipline into the visit. Buyers are briefed on international showroom etiquette and image permissions, with photography only when a brand has explicitly agreed. Respecting these standards protects long-term access and demonstrates that Chinese buyers are serious, trusted international partners.
The day then moves from buying to relationship-building: dinner in the historic Nyhavn area, the Mandatory community’s seated dinner and networking party, and Copenhagen Fashion Week’s opening-night programme. These are not decorative additions. In fashion, meaningful partnerships often begin in the conversations surrounding the formal appointment.
Day Two: From Selective Buying to Cultural Intelligence
The second day narrows the lens. We begin with Vald Agency and a close look at brands including Henrik Vibskov, Annette Görtz, Nadia Wire Studio and Gudrun & Gudrun. This agency appointment lets buyers study how mature designer businesses combine a recognisable creative voice with product continuity and a clearly defined customer.
We then move to Mandatory CPH, the independent multi-brand trade event at Øksnehallen. An official guided tour is followed by dedicated time for deeper viewing, negotiation and ordering. Compared with CIFF’s broad commercial spectrum, Mandatory offers a more concentrated view of Nordic independent and directional design, including elevated designer collections and specialist denim and workwear. Together, the two fairs give buyers both breadth and distinction—the foundation of a balanced multi-brand store.

In the afternoon, the route changes deliberately from fashion trade to cultural immersion at Louisiana Museum of Modern Art. Louisiana is not simply a place to view artworks; it brings modernist architecture, exhibition narrative, landscape, sculpture and the Danish way of life into one coherent experience. For fashion and retail professionals, it is a lesson in spatial rhythm, storytelling and how a cultural institution builds a complete brand world—including through its museum shop.
Day Three: Reading Copenhagen Through Retail, Design and the Runway
Our final Copenhagen day begins with the city itself: the harbour, Kastellet, the royal district and key examples of Danish urban planning and architecture. These references prepare the eye before the retail study begins.
At ILLUM, buyers examine how an experience-led luxury department store combines international houses, Nordic brands, beauty, food, design and community programming. The surrounding route then moves across categories and generations: the latest Louis Vuitton store concept; the curated interiors of Illums Bolighus; the craftsmanship and heritage storytelling of Royal Copenhagen and Georg Jensen; the high-energy femininity of Rotate; and the community-led sneaker and streetwear model of Naked.

New Mags demonstrates how books, magazines, design objects and interiors can turn cultural content into retail value. mfpen shows how a younger Copenhagen label can build an international image through restraint in space, fabric and silhouette. Henrik Vibskov Boutique offers a different lesson again: a highly personal, experimental world in which independent designers, art and fashion coexist without being flattened into a conventional commercial formula.
The learning continues at Designmuseum Danmark, where Danish furniture, craft, textiles and fashion place contemporary retail inside a longer design history. We then close the professional programme with the Henrik Vibskov SS27 show—seeing how one of Denmark’s most internationally recognisable independent designers moves between clothing, installation, performance and cultural authorship.
Why This Itinerary Works
The strength of the programme is not any single destination, but the logic connecting them. CIFF offers scale and commercial benchmarking. Mandatory CPH and agency appointments sharpen the independent designer edit. Official dinners and events create access to the people behind the brands. Museums train the eye. Department stores and concept shops reveal how product becomes an experience. The runway reconnects every commercial decision with creative direction.
Just as importantly, the schedule alternates concentrated buying with time to observe, discuss and recalibrate. Buyers are not rushed from booth to booth without context. Each stage supplies a different kind of evidence: product, price, storytelling, space, customer, culture and relationship. The result is a more complete decision-making framework.
What This Creates for Chinese Independent Boutiques
Differentiation does not come from adding more brands at random. It comes from building a coherent portfolio in which every label has a purpose. Throughout the journey, FASHIONREAL helps buyers evaluate brand identity, collection depth, price architecture, delivery capability, customer relevance and compatibility with the store’s existing assortment.
Our role is to connect global discovery with local retail reality. Does a brand strengthen the store’s identity? Can it sit naturally beside the current mix? Does it offer customers something genuinely new? Can the relationship be developed over more than one season? These are the questions that turn inspiration into a healthier and more distinctive business.
Copenhagen is also the opening chapter of a wider European learning journey through Amsterdam, Antwerp and Brussels, where the group will continue studying museums, pioneering boutiques, independent designer studios and the cultural ecosystems behind European fashion. The ambition is long-term: to help China’s independent retailers build stronger assortments, sharper visual judgement and a more confident international perspective.
The Professional Work Behind Every Discovery
The value of an international buying journey is created long before the first appointment. It comes from selecting the right platforms, coordinating official access, balancing ordering time with cultural learning, setting professional standards, and designing the route so that each experience informs the next.
Our January visit showed us Copenhagen’s potential. Our August return brings more time, deeper participation and a clearer framework for turning inspiration into better buying decisions. This is the professional commitment FASHIONREAL brings to every journey—and to the long-term development of China’s independent fashion retail community.
